In order to express ourselves, we have to know ourselves. This is an excellent explanation of the creative spirit and the power of art. All of us have this in us. It’s worth getting to the end where he addresses who is responsible for deciding whether our creative work is any good. It’s not up to us to focus on acclaim because the world is an extremely unreliable critic. I have mixed feelings on this — but I think he’s trying to get you to allow yourself to be great at being authentic.

Opal Lee on the Juneteenth holiday and the concept that none of us are free until we are all free. In the US, this is a new federal holiday that recognizes the end of slavery. This date is actually well after the Emancipation Proclamation and is even after the end of the Civil War.

There are multiple creative processes. I have a cousin who writes for TV and she explained a common process is to whiteboard out vague plot points such as, “Jim and Jane have conflict.” Then the writing team goes in afterward and fills in the details. You can see that this is scalable and reliable. You can farm out parts of an episode to different staff writers and you know that the structure of the episode is sound.
But this other creative process from Phoebe Waller-Bridge starts with substance and then manufactures structure. For her TV show, she writes out notes about the characters and jokes and puts them all on a whiteboard. Then she rearranges them until she can pull out some sort of coherent story.
The lesson is that there are multiple ways to be creative and you can mix and match. Use inspiration when you can, but don’t be afraid to use systems.

This is an interesting exercise idea that I’d never considered: how quickly can you relax your muscles?

This is from the world of outlandish self-improvement ideas: a wrist band that you can program to vibrate in interesting ways. Years ago at a Quantified Self meetup, I’d seen someone with a DIY version of this. They were trying to develop a new internalized sense of direction. Whenever they were facing north it would buzz, and so they were hoping that they would develop an intuition for true north. It didn’t work, but that’s the sort of experiment that you might run with this watch.
